Wiliot and EVRYTHNG Bring Battery-free, Low-cost IoT Tags to All Products

Wiliot and EVRYTHNG Bring Battery-free, Low-cost IoT Tags to All Products

We are very excited to announce a new partnership with Wiliot. Wiliot is one of the most groundbreaking technologies I’ve seen in recent years in the area of smart products.

Wiliot has created a battery-free Bluetooth chip that harvests ambient energy in place of batteries. The innovative technology recycles the radio waves around us to power sticker-size sensors that allow consumers to interact with products. Together with their partners, Wiliot is using printed electronics techniques to bundle this chip and sensors into secure, intelligent, low-cost tags (or inlays as we refer to them in the ‘tag jargon’).

To some this may seem like a small thing but, it isn’t. It is truly game-changing. Those who have read our book “Building the Web of Thing” should be familiar with the biggest challenges in the massive adoption of IoT devices. High on the list is the energy needs of IoT devices. As IoT devices and sensor nodes are in reality tiny computers, they need a steady source of power to function and communicate with the Internet. This, unfortunately, means that a lot of use cases we might dream of today are impractical in the real world.

Imagine smart packaging for instance: what if smart labels could provide continuous monitoring of the temperature of every product, or could help actively track and locate products in warehouses and stores? What if our shirts could measure our heartbeat and sugar levels? And, what if our phones could identify and connect to these labels?

Think about it, if you dislike having to recharge your smartwatch on a daily basis, imagine having to change a battery on your shirt or your pack of strawberries!

This is where Wiliot is game-changing: Wiliot’s tags are battery-free, recycling the radio waves around us (specifically the 2.4 GHz band that our WiFi and mobile phones use). This energy is enough to power the chip and sensors but also to communicate with any piece of infrastructure that supports Bluetooth (e.g., our phones, routers, computers, TVs, etc.) allowing consumers to interact with products.

Energy harvesting is not totally new to the IoT. As a matter of fact, I’ve been carrying around a Bluetooth battery-free pollution sensor in my bag for the past few years. What’s new is Wiliot’s low cost to entry and small form factor, making it closer to a tag than to a full-on IoT device. The expert reader will certainly argue that UHF RFID tags (aka RAIN RFID) are also low cost and a small form factor. However, there is one key difference. Where UHF RFID requires significant investments in deploying dedicated readers wherever coverage is needed, Wiliot tags leverage the existing infrastructure to harvest power and also to communicate and share data back to the cloud.

For Wiliot to fully deliver on its vision of scaling the IoT by tagging everything that’s important — it partnered with EVRYTHNG because the EVRYTHNG Product Cloud allows consumer product brands to digitize products at a global scale and apply data intelligence throughout the end-to-end product lifecycle. It is truly a powerful combination.

EVRYTHNG helps Wiliot turn its low cost, secure and intelligent Bluetooth tags into standard GS1 Digital Link identities allowing them to become standard Web identities that mobile phones and other devices (e.g., POS) can directly understand. By combining our Product Cloud with innovations like Wiliot’s technology and GS1 Digital Link, we make product digitization accessible to brands across industries and around the globe. Brands can relay rich sensing and location data collected by the Wiliot tags to the EVRYTHNG Product Cloud via EVRYTHNG Active Digital Identities™. In doing this, brands receive all the benefits of EVRYTHNG’s fine-grained access control & standard data models (e.g., EPCIS, W3C WoT), business rules (Reactor™), machine learning (Predictor™) and powerful dashboards and analytics.

EVRYTHNG is currently working with Wiliot on several projects for brands. For instance, we are working together to demonstrate how products with Wiliot tags can detect when they are picked up in a store (via a pressure sensor) and communicate this to the EVRYTHNG Product Cloud which then orchestrates the data showing contextualized content on consumer mobile phones as well as in-store screens via our digital signage partner Screenly. Similarly, we have shown that by putting Wiliot tags on boxes of produce or perishables to collect sensory data, our Product Cloud can continuously monitor the temperature of products, making the information accessible via mobile devices and other applications.

As you can tell, we are very excited about this partnership and what it means for the consumer products industry. Wiliot’s innovative technology combined with our Product Cloud has the power to bring the IoT to all products unlocking unprecedented use cases in manufacturing, supply chain, retail and consumer engagement.

This week at #NRF2020 Wiliot announced EVRYTHNG as a Works with Wiliot partner, an ecosystem of technology leaders working together to build best-of-breed solutions to tap into the company’s battery-free Bluetooth technology.

Upgrading Our Partnership with OriginTrail

Upgrading Our Partnership with OriginTrail

It has been more than a year since we started actively working with OriginTrail, one of our original Blockchain Integration Hub partners. It has been a productive year of collaboration, so I wanted to take the opportunity to highlight some of the work we have been doing together.

Facilitating data sharing amongst actors of apparel supply chain

You may have read our recent news about an innovative AMPLIFY project for apparel brand 1017 ALYX 9SM. Collaborating with our apparel smart labeling partner Avery Dennison, we raised the bar on the promise of transparency and sustainability in the apparel industry. With this project, consumers have instant access to full product provenance simply by scanning an apparel item’s unique digital identity with any smartphone. The 1017 ALYX 9SM solution demonstrates a mix of blockchain use cases for the supply chain, including:

  • It allows brands to guarantee the authenticity of provenance data—using our IOTA Blockchain Integration Hub connector.
  • It also allows supply chain data to be shared in a resilient and decentralized manner—using OriginTrail’s unique incentivized replication system. EVRYTHNG’s Blockchain Integration Hub integrates features of multiple/different decentralized ledger technologies (DLTs). As a result, supply chain data about each individual apparel item can be shared using the GS1 EPCIS format and replicated across the decentralized network for better, more resilient data exchange between actors of the supply chain.

For our more technically inclined readers, this replication feature is now also supported in our official OriginTrail open source connector. Thanks to the success of this pilot application on EVRYTHNG’s managed nodes of OriginTrail test network, both teams are now looking forward to larger deployments of supply chain data sharing on the main OriginTrail Decentralized Network (ODN).

Product Provenance

Joining the Trace Alliance

We are also delighted to announce that we were invited by OriginTrail to join the Trace Alliance. The Trace Alliance is a non-profit association initiated by OriginTrail which connects businesses, the public sector, academics and technology companies in the field of blockchain research and the creation of practical solutions primarily for supply chains. The collaborative effort of the alliance aims to resolve a variety of challenges and come up with solutions for a wide range of use cases through increased supply chain integrity, data governance, transparency and trust.

We are delighted to join this alliance and look forward to collaborations with OriginTrail and the alliance’s numerous members.

Empowering Brands and Consumers with New ‘Track to the Rack’ Capabilities

Empowering Brands and Consumers with New ‘Track to the Rack’ Capabilities

Mass-Scale Product Digitization Meets the Blockchain

This week we announced an innovative AMPLIFY project between EVRYTHNG, Avery Dennison, IOTA and 1017 ALYX 9SM—raising the bar on the promise of transparency and sustainability in the apparel industry. Consumers now have instant access to full product provenance simply by scanning the apparel item’s QR code label with a smartphone.

While we have been helping brands create direct-to-consumer experiences through mass-scale product digitization for several years—the addition of IOTA’s distributed ledger technology (DLT) allows us to bring a whole new level of transparency to the market. Consumers now receive full provenance information assuring consumers the apparel they buy and wear is ethically sourced from sustainable sources.

Product Provenance

Why Now? A New Era of Sustainability

We are witnessing a whole new era of sustainability. Consumers around the world are increasingly motivated to be more environmentally conscious and they are exercising their voice through the products they buy. This said, knowing the provenance of products is a critical part of a consumer’s decision-making process.

Brands able to provide customers with product information, supply chain traceability and overall transparency will come out on top. As in the case of 1017 ALYX 9SM, blockchain and DLTs are playing a lead role in defining the future of brand protection—while helping build trust with valued customers.

With today’s announcement we combine the power of mass-scale product digitization with the immutability of IOTA’s DLT. This innovative solution will allow brands to meet the divergent needs and expectations of today’s consumers—from Gen X to Gen Z.

Consumers no longer just make purchasing decisions based on convenience and price. They make purchasing decisions based on a brand’s ability to fulfill their need to better the world. In fact, a recent survey by Nielsen reported 81% of global respondents feel strongly that companies should help improve the environment. This passion for corporate social responsibility is shared across gender lines and generations. Gen Z, Millenials and Gen X are the most supportive, but Baby Boomers aren’t far behind.

Taking a Deep Dive into the Technology

The proof of concept distributed ledger technology (DLT) solution announced today is an extension of Avery Dennison’s Janela™ platform, powered by EVRYTHNG, which allows brands to create clothing that is born digital, and connect with their customers directly via a QR code on the label containing a unique product identity. With this announcement, we’ve added the capabilities of EVRYTHNG Blockchain Integration Hub partner, IOTA, to provide consumers with full transparency and provenance for the 1017 ALYSX 9SM apparel items they purchase and wear.

By scanning a unique QR code on the garment’s label with their smartphone, consumers can view the clothing item’s “journey” and track it back from creation to the rack and point of sale. At the same time, 1017 ALYX 9SM and other brands will now have full visibility of their product’s journey throughout the supply chain, giving them access to real-time data and statistics, via IOTA’s DLT, also known as the Tangle.

This last point is very important to consumers who have lost trust in brands. With this new solution, consumers can be assured the provenance data shared by 1017 ALYX 9SM is authentic because it is written to an immutable and decentralized network—making it impossible to forge.

The solution also includes an integration with OriginTrail, another EVRYTHNG Blockchain Integration Hub partner. The use of OriginTrail’s blockchain facilitates decentralized data sharing between supply chain partners, including, global collaboration, reliability, auditability, while assuring only authorized parties gain access to the data.

These images display both what the consumer receives upon scanning a QR code to authenticate the data trail of an apparel item and what 1017 ALYX 9SM and its supply chain partners see as items travel through the supply chain from sourcing to retail.

Track to the Rack

There are many things that make this solution different but one of the biggest differentiators and benefits for brands is the scalability of this solution. We successfully worked with Avery Dennison to deploy a Proof-of-Concept (PoC) of this solution across different factories to simulate real-world manufacturing processes. With 1017 ALYX 9SM, we bring this PoC to the real world. As displayed in the image above, brands can now collect real-time data intelligence throughout an apparel item’s supply chain journey no matter how many factories or third parties may be involved, and then preserve this data in the blockchain—or in the case of 1017 ALYX 9SM, IOTA’s distributed ledger—in a cost-effective and highly scalable manner.

Taking this one step further, we allow consumers to access detailed transparency data, down to the raw materials used to manufacture the item, via a simple and convenient QR code scan. We do this by activating products at source with a label embedded with a scannable digital identity.

EVRYTHNG Blockchain Integration Hub and IOTA

As shared, the use of blockchain and/or distributed ledger technology in itself is a big differentiator for brands. Last month we celebrated the one-year anniversary of the EVRYTHNG Blockchain Integration Hub. The EVRYTHNG Hub helps brands simply and cost-effectively assess which blockchain solutions and capabilities are most appropriate for their business and then rapidly deploy. By removing a number of risks associated with deploying blockchain technologies, we allow brands to focus on experimenting with the business benefits rather than the complexity of the technology. A win-win for the brand and the consumer.

Using the EVRYTHNG Blockchain Integration Hub, we were able to combine two of the distributed ledgers we integrate with to deliver a complete solution for 1017 ALYX 9SM. Currently, the fees charged by other public blockchains like, Ethereum and Bitcoin, makes the application of the technology for full traceability impractical. With IOTA’s unique distributed ledger technology, people and machines can transfer data or value without any transaction fees in a trustless, permissionless and decentralized environment.

What’s Next

This is just the beginning of continued big changes we expect to see in the apparel industry and consumer products industry at large. We believe current consumer expectations for provenance data is only going to grow as voices rise in the call for sustainability. And the integration of blockchain and other DLTs into supply chain traceability solutions will transition from being considered a competitive differentiator to an industry requirement. Our EVRYTHNG Blockchain Integration Hub removes the risk for consumer product brands wanting to explore the possibilities of blockchain. Avery Dennison And EVRYTHNG Partner With 1017 ALYX 9SM Allowing Consumers To ‘Track To The Rack’

New sustainability benchmark unveiled to the world at Copenhagen Fashion Summit

COPENHAGEN, MAY 15, 2019 – Avery Dennison (NYSE:AVY) and EVRYTHNG today announced the launch of an innovative new blockchain solution for the fashion industry, in partnership with 1017 ALYX 9SM, Matthew Williams’s cutting edge fashion label. This proof of concept distributed ledger technology (DLT) solution is an extension of Avery Dennison’s Janela™ platform, powered by EVRYTHNG, which allows brands to create clothing that is born digital, and connect with their customers directly via a QR code on the label. With this announcement, we’ve added the capabilities of EVRYTHNG Blockchain Integration Hub partner, IOTA, to provide consumers with full transparency and provenance for the 1017 ALYX 9SM apparel items they purchase and wear.

Brand transparency is more important than ever to consumers, who express growing concerns over sustainable and ethically sourced fashion, alongside clothing provenance. This ‘track to the rack’ capability is a response to those concerns and allows consumers and brands alike to see an item’s journey from creation to sale, understand exactly where the product has come from and prove its provenance.

By scanning a label with their smartphone, consumers can view the garment’s journey and track it back from creation to the rack and point of sale. Brands will have full visibility of their product’s journey throughout the supply chain, giving them access to data and statistics, via IOTA’s distributed ledger, across different sales channels and consumer preferences in real time.

This partnership with 1017 ALYX 9SM is one of the first public proofs-of-concept of the solution. Avery Dennison met the ALYX team at last year’s Copenhagen Fashion Summit during an innovation speed dating event hosted by the summit organisers. Avery Dennison has since undertaken a series of internal pilots to get the solution market-ready and will unveil it at this year’s summit as the culmination of an exciting year-long collaboration.

Matthew Williams is an innovative designer who is committed to pushing new ideas forward, and he is currently a Nike collaborator who also worked with Virgil Abloh and Kanye West. Williams built 1017 ALYX 9SM on the concept of high-quality materials mixed with subversive culture, and the garments are produced in Italy.

“Blockchain and distributed ledger technology is the future for effective brand protection,” said Williams. “By supplying product information, supply chain traceability and transparent dialogue with the consumer, the brand’s authenticity is globally secured. Collaborating with Avery Dennison to explore the potential of this software has informed our approach to communication.”

“Unveiling this partnership with ALYX is a big moment for us,” says Debbie Shakespeare, senior director of sustainability and compliance, Avery Dennison. “Our innovative solution combines our Janela platform with a new blockchain layer, providing consumers and brands with fundamental uncompromisable data. Brands and consumers can know that the information they are being shown about the garment’s creation process is 100% accurate and can be trusted implicitly. This is a watershed moment for improving brand transparency and trust.”

“Our collaboration with Avery Dennison and IOTA brings a whole new level of supply chain traceability to the apparel industry,” said Dominique Guinard, co-founder and CTO, EVRYTHNG. “Today’s consumers demand brands demonstrate transparency, authenticity and sustainability in the supply chain. We are excited to partner with Avery Dennison and help 1017 ALYX 9SM deliver this to customers through a new distributed ledger technology-based solution, powered by IOTA. Customers will now be able to access an apparel item’s provenance via a smartphone scan of a QR code label.”

Avery Dennison and 1017 ALYX 9SM will be at Copenhagen Fashion Summit on May 15 and 16, 2019, showcasing items from the ALYX collection that are equipped with the blockchain solution. Visitors will be able to experience firsthand how the solution works and the type of information it presents to brands and consumers.

EVRYTHNG, IOTA Partner to Bring Distributed Ledger Technology-Based IoT Solutions to Consumer Products Industry

Blockchain integration with IOTA

EVRYTHNG, IOTA Partner to Bring Distributed Ledger Technology-Based IoT Solutions to Consumer Products Industry

EVRYTHNG, the IoT platform that activates every consumer product to make it intelligent, interactive and trackable, today announced the expansion of its EVRYTHNG Blockchain Integration Hub to include integrations with IOTA, a non-profit foundation focused on distributed ledger technology (DLT) and permissionless ecosystem development. As a result of this partnership, consumer product brands now have an easy way to rapidly test, scale and deploy IoT applications to deliver transparency and provenance to customers while sharing real-time data between supply chain partners.

“We are celebrating the one-year anniversary of our EVRYTHNG Blockchain Integration Hub,” said Dominique Guinard, Co-founder and CTO, EVRYTHNG. “Over the past year, not only have we created powerful integrations with some of the most recognized blockchains in the world including, OriginTrail, Tierion, BLOCKv, Bitcoin and Ethereum but, we’ve launched real-world applications with the technology. This is why we are so excited to announce a strategic partnership with IOTA, a totally different kind of distributed ledger technology, specifically targeted at the IoT industry — opening new opportunities for consumer product brands.”

According to a recent study by Deloitte, 42 percent of consumer products and manufacturing executives plan to invest at least $5 million in blockchain technology over the next year. IoT applications will account for a significant percentage of this investment in the form of:

    • consumer – improving and protecting the consumer experience
    • supply-chain – improving process efficiencies across the supply chain

While the consumer products industry is well positioned to benefit from the opportunities blockchain and DLT afford, industry first-movers must first overcome several challenges:

    • high costs associated with testing blockchain/DLT platforms to determine the – best fit and solution maturity;
    • complexity in implementation; and
    • limited inhouse expertise

The EVRYTHNG Blockchain Integration Hub helps brands simply and cost-effectively assess which blockchain and DLT solutions and capabilities are most appropriate for their business and then, rapidly deploy.

Why IOTA?
IOTA brings a whole new dimension to the EVRYTHNG Blockchain Integration Hub. As with other EVRYTHNG hub connectors, the IOTA integration allows consumer product brands to experiment with emerging DLT capabilities while relying on the scalability, interoperability and maturity of the EVRYTHNG platform. With IOTA’s unique distributed ledger technology, people and machines can securely transfer data or payments without transaction fees in a trusted, permissionless, and decentralized environment.

    • Authenticity – consumer products can be traced through the supply chain from sourcing to manufacturer to retailer to consumer — proving authenticity of products; reducing risk of counterfeiting; and creating trust among consumers
    • Traceability & Provenance – drives business value for brands through end-to-end supply-chain traceability; greater supply chain visibility also benefits consumers in the form of safer and more transparent products as well as higher quality
    • Supply Chain Control – facilitates real-time data sharing between supply chain partners, combining the benefits of distributed ledger technology — global collaboration, reliability, auditability — while assuring only authorized parties gain access to unencrypted data

“IOTA’s distributed ledger technology moves beyond blockchain by enabling secure, feeless, data transfer and payments to advance IoT. Due to the nature of the supply chain and its lack of transparency and trust, IOTA’s Tangle technology is uniquely positioned to address these challenges. This partnership with EVRYTHNG clearly demonstrates how both consumer brands and their customers can benefit from greater transparency in the sourcing and manufacturing of consumer products,” said Holger Köther, director of partnerships, IOTA Foundation.

“We believe IOTA will be the public and permissionless backbone protocol for the IoT that creates true interoperability between all things and devices,” said Guinard. “This is critical in a world of mass-scale product digitization where over two billion smartphones can now access and share information via a single on-pack code.”

Year-One Milestones

IOTA: A New Partner on the Block(chain)

IOTA integration

IOTA: A New Partner on the Block(chain)

Celebrating a year of milestones

It has been a year since the launch of our Blockchain Integration Hub. A year full of milestones leading to real world deployments of products combining EVRYTHNG Active Digital IdentitiesTM and a mix of different blockchains. For instance, Almond launched FACT, a new drink brand digitized on the EVRYTHNG platform. Every FACT can tell the product’s unique story—where, when and how its ingredients were farmed, where and when it was packaged and its journey to store.

IOTA integration with EVRYTHNG

The EVRYTHNG Blockchain integration Hub helps brands simply and cost-effectively assess which blockchain solutions and capabilities are most appropriate for their business and then rapidly deploy. Consumer product brands can now experiment with the unique features of individual blockchains without the risk. By removing the risk, we allow brands to focus on the business benefits rather than the complexity of the technology. A win-win for the brand and the consumer.

Over the past year, we have created powerful integrations with some of the most recognized blockchains in the world including, OriginTrail, Tierion, BLOCKv, Bitcoin and Ethereum. This is why we are so excited to announce a strategic partnership with IOTA, a quite different kind of public distributed ledger technology (DLT), with a toolset and ecosystem targeted at IoT and supply chain use cases.

What’s so special about IOTA?

IOTA brings a whole new dimension to the EVRYTHNG Blockchain Integration Hub. As with other EVRYTHNG hub connectors, the IOTA integration allows consumer product brands to experiment with emerging DLT capabilities while relying on the scalability, interoperability and maturity of the EVRYTHNG platform. With IOTA’s unique distributed ledger technology, people and machines can transfer data or value without any transaction fees in a trustless, permissionless and decentralized environment. This last point is game changing for IoT and supply chain use cases. Currently, the fees charged by other public blockchains like, Ethereum and Bitcoin, put the technology out of reach for many brands.

IOTA is a big player in the emerging world of public blockchains with a consistent ranking among the largest blockchains in market capitalization. Interestingly, IOTA is also recognized as a blockchain without the blocks or the chain!

Instead of using a blockchain-based distributed ledger at its core, it uses a directed acyclic graph (DAG). This is why IOTA is a distributed ledger technology rather than a blockchain. This is important because it provides consumer product brands with more options, including:

  • Faster transactions
  • Less energy consumption
  • Adaptability for use with resource-limited devices

Looking to the future, IOTA transactions actually carry value (MIOTA tokens) to facilitate secure communication across the IoT and provide autonomous compensation: imagine for instance a container tracking sensor being rewarded by a client application for providing temperature and location information about the shipment it tracks, or supply chain information systems being rewarded with crypto tokens for sharing data to authorized parties.

Tell me more. Why should I care?

Because IOTA is a general purpose DLT, the integration can be used for a wide variety of use cases in both IoT and supply chain contexts. This is critical for the target markets we serve—specifically, the consumer products and apparel industry. Following are just a few of the many reasons we are excited to partner with IOTA:

  • IOTA’s MAM protocol. This system allows consumer product brands to elegantly link transactions together to retrieve each individual product’s entire lifecycle in a single transaction. This capability is particularly useful in delivering IoT and supply chain applications such as:
    • Authenticity – consumer products can be traced through the supply chain from sourcing to manufacturer to retailer to consumer—proving authenticity of products; reducing risk of counterfeiting; and creating trust among consumers
    • Traceability & Provenance – drives business value for brands through end-to-end supply-chain traceability; greater supply chain visibility also benefits consumers in the form of safer and more transparent products as well as higher quality
    • Supply Chain Control – facilitates real-time data sharing between supply chain partners, combining the benefits of a public blockchain—global collaboration, reliability, auditability—while assuring only authorized parties gain access to unencrypted data
  • IOTA has also been designed to accept data from sensors. As a result, IOTA’s DLT can be used in combination with the EVRYTHNG platform to deliver auditable sensor data. This is important for applications like the active tracking of pallets or containers in the supply chain.

Availability

As with our other blockchain integrations, the code is now available and open sourced on Github. Also, the full documentation is available on our developer hub.

What’s next?

Beyond the technical integration between IOTA’s DLT and the EVRYTHNG Blockchain Integration Hub, we are also working with the IOTA Foundation to deliver projects that utilize both companies’ platforms including two commercial projects we’ll be announcing soon. Stay tuned.

If you’re interested in piloting blockchain integrations to make your products smarter, please contact us today!

Summary:

  • EVRYTHNG now offers an integration with IOTA, one of the world’s leading public blockchains
  • As with our other EVRYTHNG Blockchain Integration Hub connectors, the IOTA integration allows consumer product brands to experiment with the emerging capabilities of blockchains while relying on the scalability, interoperability and maturity of the EVRYTHNG platform
  • The IOTA integration is especially useful for IoT and supply chain use cases such as transparency and provenance for consumers and real-time data sharing between supply chain partners

EVRYTHNG Expands to Asia, Brings Product Digitization to Hub of Global Manufacturing

EVRYTHNG Expands to Asia, Brings Product Digitization to Hub of Global Manufacturing

July 11, 2018 — SINGAPORE — EVRYTHNG, the market leading Internet of Things (IoT) data management platform for consumer products, today announced the company has expanded to Asia with the opening of a regional hub in Singapore in partnership with AccelerAsia.

This announcement follows news from the World Economic Forum that EVRYTHNG is a Technology Pioneer 2018. EVRYTHNG was selected by a selection committee of more than 60 academics, entrepreneurs, venture capitalists and corporate executives. The World Economic Forum recognized EVRYTHNG as a pioneer in product digitization — helping consumer product brands reclaim product intelligence in the GS1 standard format, while creating unique and direct links between consumers and the brands they buy throughout the product life-cycle.

“We are thrilled to be bringing the power of product digitization to Asia, the hub of global manufacturing,” said Niall Murphy, Co-founder and CEO, EVRYTHNG. “With EVRYTHNG, the four trillion consumer products made and sold every year can now talk and tell their stories in real-time — revealing unprecedented insights and opportunities for greater efficiency and sustainability.”

Why Product Digitization?
Product digitization gives manufacturers greater control and visibility into the supply chain — arming them with the product-driven data and intelligence needed to combat real issues in today’s market, including:

  • Counterfeit products
  • Gray market imports
  • Food safety
  • Sustainability
  • Customer loyalty

EVRYTHNG collects data throughout each individual product’s lifecycle from the sourcing of ingredients to consumer purchase to recycling. This is particularly relevant in Asia where counterfeiting and gray market issues are a growing threat to consumers and manufacturers, alike.

Why Asia?
Beyond being a manufacturing hub, Asia is also ahead of the curve in the adoption of mobile technologies. Thanks to apps like WeChat, WhatsApp and Alipay, consumer interaction with QR codes is commonplace, with over 100 million daily scans and over $5.5 trillion of contactless payments annually. Product digitization – enabling consumers to scan QR codes on items for provenance, authenticity and rewards – is perfectly suited for the mobile-first Asian market.

“The reality is a disproportionate percentage of consumer product life-cycles begin in the Asia region,” said Mr. Murphy. “This combined with advanced consumer behavior means that adoption of a digitized product ecosystem will be high and consumer product brands will realize a return-on-investment much faster.”

EVRYTHNG will be expanding into Asia through AccelerAsia, a business development firm that helps cutting-edge technology companies from Europe, US and Israel enter the Asian market.

Frank Bomers, Partner at AccelerAsia said, “After EVRYTHNG’s success in Europe and North America, expanding into one of the largest consumer markets in the world, Asia-Pacific, makes perfect sense. Asia is digitising at a breakneck pace, and in many ways leapfrogging from the pre-industrial to the IoT era — technology adoption that took decades in other markets sometimes takes just months in some of Asia’s megacities.”

“EVRYTHNG’s product portfolio is a perfect fit for AccelerAsia as a channel and for APAC as a market. We look forward to a long and fruitful relationship with EVRYTHNG,” continued Mr. Bomers.

To learn more about how EVRYTHNG is helping consumer product manufacturers in Asia, we invite you to come meet and hear Corey Wilson, Vice President, EVRYTHNG speak at ProPack China 2018 in Shanghai on July 12.

EVRYTHNG Brings the Power of Product Digitization to Asia

We’re excited to bring the power of product digitization to Asia — the manufacturing hub of some of the world’s biggest brands. Today, we’ve announced a partnership with AccelerAsia, along with a new regional office in Singapore, to enable us to meet the rapidly increasing business demand in the region.

Product digitization gives manufacturers greater control and visibility into the supply chain — arming them with the product-driven data and intelligence needed to combat real issues in today’s market and protect brand integrity. We’re talking:

  • Counterfeit products
  • Gray market imports
  • Food safety
  • Sustainability
  • Recycling
  • Consumer digital premiums

Brands need a simple, scalable solution that is future proof — that will work with whatever supply chain software they already have invested in, as well as new technologies that are already on the way, like blockchain.

EVRYTHNG collects data throughout each individual product’s lifecycle from the sourcing of ingredients to consumer purchase to recycling. This is particularly relevant in Asia where counterfeiting and gray market issues are a growing threat to consumers and manufacturers, alike.

Why Asia?
Beyond being a manufacturing hub, Asia is ahead of the curve in the adoption of mobile technologies. Thanks to apps like WeChat, WhatsApp and Alipay, consumer interaction with QR codes is commonplace, with over 100 million daily scans and over $5.5 trillion of contactless payments annually.

Product digitization — which allows consumers to scan packaging and labels on items for provenance, authenticity and rewards — is perfectly suited for the mobile-first Asian market.

The reality is a disproportionate percentage of consumer product lifecycles begin in the Asia region. This combined with advanced consumer behavior means that adoption of a digitized product ecosystem will be high and consumer product brands will realize a return-on-investment much faster.

About AccelerAsia
AccelerAsia is a business development firm that helps cutting-edge technology companies from Europe, US and Israel enter the Asian market. According to Frank Bomers, Partner at AccelerAsia, “Asia is digitizing at a breakneck pace, and in many ways leapfrogging from the pre-industrial to the IoT era — technology adoption that took decades in other markets sometimes takes just months in some of Asia’s megacities.”

EVRYTHNG – Origin Trail Integration: Adding Trust to Product Authenticity

EVRYTHNG – Origin Trail Integration: Adding Trust to Product Authenticity

Continuing on our quest to provide our customers with a broad range of integrations they can use to make their products smarter, we are happy to announce a new integration with a new partner: OriginTrail. This integration will allow EVRYTHNG’s customers to push selected transactions from and about products to OriginTrail’s cutting-edge blockchain solution, leveraging some of the core features of decentralization such as tamper proof transactions or consensus based verification.

OriginTrail is building a specialized protocol for supply chains based on blockchain technology. Their goal is to augment the supply chain with some of the very things blockchains are good at. For instance, OriginTrail allows supply chain transactions to be immutable. It also allows several actors in a supply chain to validate data without necessarily having to trust each other. These are really exciting features and is a great continuation in EVRYTHNG leveraging some of the interesting aspects of blockchains while not reinventing the wheel.

How does it work?

To make this integration a reality both teams sat together and collaborated on a connector. The connector was built as a Reactor script allowing our (or OriginTrail’s) customers to build a scalable bridge between the two platforms. This bridge is essentially capable of converting EVRYTHNG supply chain transactions (called Actions in our world) tagged with a createOriginTrail=true custom field into the GS1 EPCIS standard that both platforms use to communicate. The transaction is then automatically pushed to a decentralized OriginTrail node via its API and made available in the OriginTrail platform built on top of the Ethereum public blockchain.

Making Barry even smarter!

Barry the Bear at the EU Commission in Brussels!

We tested the integration on Barry, the incredibly smart bear we created with GS1 for the GS1 Global Forum. Some of the key steps of Barry’s supply chain journey were sent through the OriginTrail – EVRYTHNG bridge to make them tamper proof, thanks to the immutability of blockchains. This basically allows building an authenticity certificate for Barry that can be verified on OriginTrail.

These features were added to the Web app served via the EVRYTHNG platform when scanning Barry’s tag, closing the loop of making the verification features available to consumers.

Our firend’s at OriginTrail then took the new version of Barry to the European Commission where they were invited to present solutions that can help fight counterfeit-related crime in the digital age in frame of a memorandum of understanding pledging to fight the sale of counterfeit goods online signed by companies like Alibaba, Nike, Adidas, and Channel. We heard Barry made quite an impression on the EU Commission 🙂 .

Next steps

After this successful Proof of Concept both teams are now looking at packaging the connector, making it available to any of our respective customers wanting to connect to OriginTrail’s network to leverage some of the unique features decentralization has to offer.

This step will also include EVRYTHNG operating its own OriginTrail nodes to create a scalable and secure bridge between the two platforms. Stay tuned for updates on that and meanwhile check our other blockchain integrations.

Carrefour Tests Smart Recycling Powered by EVRYTHNG & recycl3R

EVRYTHNG and recycl3R collaborate with Carrefour and The Circular Lab to pilot a new initiative leveraging Smart Products to improve recycling habits.

Logroño, 13th April.- A collaboration between EVRYTHNG, recycl3R, Carrefour, and The Circular Lab has developed a mobile application, Recicla Ya, that allows customers of Carrefour to scan products and receive information on how to properly recycle them. Customers are incentivized by a reward system to use the app and recycle their products.

The retailer has successfully launched the first trial of the project at the Circular Lab, the innovation center of Ecoembes, located in Logroño, Spain. During the pilot, 50 Carrefour customers had the opportunity to try the Recicla Ya app and give feedback.

Consumers in the supermarket area selecting products and going through the checkout process

In the pilot, consumers experienced shopping with a twist. They took a simulated visit to a Carrefour supermarket, selected some of their regular products, and went through the checkout process as usual.

The barcode on the receipt in this case had an enhanced use. By scanning it with the Recicla Ya app, the purchased products appear and are catalogued within the app. Consumers can then use the app to keep track of their products and get information on how to sort their waste, depending on the parts of the products and the corresponding recycling scheme in the area (plastic/metal, cardboard, glass or regular waste).

Consumers scanning their receipts and checking their products in the app

The app also geolocates the closest waste and recycling containers and displays information about the collection schedule. Additionally, street bins become “Smart Bins” by the use of Smart Tags deployed on the bins with QR Codes and NFC technology (this last one provided by our partner Thinfilm). Consumers can dispose of their garbage and use the Recicla Ya app to check and acknowledge which container they used.

Consumers interact with the SmartTags on the bins

All of the actions carried out by consumers in the application were virtually rewarded through a point system. As part of the pilot, we surveyed the consumers to test their reactions to the idea of being rewarded in different ways for improving their recycling habits. We’ll be sharing the results and technical aspects in an upcoming blog — stay tuned!

Next steps include deploying the system at scale in two cities in Spain — Logroño and Palma de Mallorca — in the following months.

EVRYTHNG’s Smart Products Platform provides the capabilities to execute and deploy such a system at scale, providing a digital identity to all the products from Carrefour and all the street bins deployed in the city. It also provides seamless integration with external data systems, such as the recycling information service developed by recycl3R and the NFC tagging technology provided by Thinfilm, contributing to the digital transformation of fast moving consumer goods — in this specific case with the aim of improving the recycling habits of consumers.

This initiative was carried out inside the TagItSmart project, a European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation program under grant agreement No 688061. http://tagitsmart.eu/
